Nissan LEAF Charging Stations and Chargers

Everything You Need to Know About Charging a Nissan LEAF

The Nissan LEAF is currently the best selling electric car in the world, surpassing the 400,000 mark in March 2019. In late 2010, Nissan introduced the LEAF as a 2011 model and has been selling the model ever since. In late 2017, Nissan introduced its second generation LEAF in Japan and the US and European in the winter of 2018.

Nissan LEAF Charger, Battery and Mile Range

The Nissan LEAF EV originally had a 24 kWh battery pack, but Nissan has upgraded the LEAF’s battery three times since 2011. In 2016, Nissan offered an optional 30 kWh battery for the LEAF, increasing its driving range from 84 miles to 107 miles of range. Then, in 2018 a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery was introduced, which has an EPA range rating of 151 miles of range. Most recently, in 2019, Nissan added the LEAF e-Plus to the lineup, which has a 62 kWh battery. The base LEAF with the 40 kWh battery pack is still available.

For the Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging session, the LEAF uses the industry standard SAE J1772 connector in North America. The Nissan LEAF charger port is located in the front center of the vehicle, above the bumper. The LEAF has undergone a couple charging rate and battery capacity upgrades in its nine-year existence, demonstrated in the chart below. Match up your LEAF with the model year, charging rates and battery size, to see how long an EV charger can take to charge your LEAF.

Level 3 DC fast charging: CHAdeMO

All model years of the Nissan LEAF are capable of level 3 DC fast charging, which is what you'll find at many public charging stations. The LEAF uses the Japanese DC fast charging standard, CHAdeMO. Unlike the North American standard, the SAE Combined Charging System or CCS, CHAdeMO requires the vehicle to have a second inlet for the CHAdeMO connector.

Charging session times for the Nissan LEAF on a Level 3 fast charger is about 45 minutes to achieve 80% charge. The Nissan Leaf’s charge times are similar for the 40 kWh and 62 kWh models, because in 2019 Nissan increased the level 3 charge rate from 50 kW to 100 kW on the LEAF e-Plus with the 62 kWh battery. Like the 40 kWh LEAF currently offered, older versions of the LEAF with the 24 kWh and 30 kWh batteries are limited to 50 kW. The 24 kWh LEAF takes less than 30 minutes to reach 80%, and the 30 kWh LEAF takes about 30 minutes to reach 80% state of charge from empty.

DC fast charging can be found at public charging stations, which are often located at office or mall parking lots. Nissan LEAF EV owners should know that although using a public EV charger is not typically the most convenient charging option for an EV, it is the fastest way to charge up your Nissan LEAF's battery when you are out and about. If you are an EV owner looking for home charging station, see our recommended Nissan LEAF level 2 charging stations below. Any of these can serve as your Nissan LEAF home charger.

Nissan LEAF driver JuiceBox reviews

  • Highly recommended
Great unit. Two screws to mount the backplate to the wall. Slip unit in. One more screw to hold it in place. Plug it in and go. It successfully made a very stable connection to my wi-fi network even though the signal in the garage is too weak for my iPhone to connect to. Excellent app and PC software. It’s capable of putting out 40A, which is overkill for my 2013 Leaf S, (base model) with the standard 3.6Kw charger that only draws 14.7 amps, but it’ll be fantastic if I ever pull the trigger on my dream Tesla. This base model Leaf also lacks internet connectivity, so having the powerful software capability of the JuiceBox is very helpful. It as very stiff to plug into a new receptacle. I found it very effective to use a rubber mallet to drive the plug home.

  • JuiceBox Pro 40. Amazing Product
I recently bought a 2016 Nissan Leaf with the 30kWh battery. This is my first EV. I used the regular charger for the week and decided to get a level 2 EVSE. After much research, I bought 2 of these, one for my house and the other for my girlfriend’s home as we live 15 miles from each other and I spend the weekends in her part of the city.

  • Sturdy, reliable
Sturdy, reliable, full-featured, and with excellent customer service. I purchased my JuiceBox Pro 40 over 2 years ago when I purchased my Nissan Leaf. The online data and statistics are good, the app is even better. This is a quality product made in the USA.

  • Fantastic for my 2014 Nissan Leaf
Bought a used Nissan Leaf last month and have had the “trickle” charger up to now. Just got a plug installed in the garage for the JuiceBox and WOW is it game-changing. Only been up and running a couple days, but yesterday in a little under an hour it went from 33% to 71% charged. Going to sign up for “time of use” plan with my local utility in Portland, OR with the timer options. Wifi network configuration was easy.

  • Nice Feacher Rich, Heavy Duty, EVSE with WiFi and Amazon Alexa Support.
I did a lot of research trying to determine what EVSE to get for my new Nissan LEAF. I’m glad I decided on this one. I picked the Juicebox Pro. My main reason was the ability for you to set different amperage or current levels. It will gradually adjust to the new values in just a couple of minutes or so. I liked that. Plus, with the WiFi access on my Amazon Alexa, I can check the status of the charge just by asking Alexa. Or even start charging. Not sure why the Alexa skill won’t let you stop charging, but hopefully that will be fixed in an update to the skill. The Android app that you can download for free, shows the specs live, like the voltage, amperage, power in kW, the temperature of the battery (very handy to protect the battery), the frequency of the current...
